Dear students

This subject uses ‘eduStream’ technology to record lectures and place them on the Internet as audio [and video] recordings.

You will be able to use a web browser on a computer to access recorded lectures. You can use:

  • a computer at the Student Central Computer Laboratories on Wollongong campus
  • a computer at [list of satellite campuses], or
  • a home computer.

If you are using a University computer lab, please bring your own headphones.

If you want to use eduStream at home, you will need:

  1. a computer with a sound card and speakers
  2. a modem or broadband
  3. local access to the Internet of sufficient speed — this is up to you to organise
  4. the latest QuickTime player installed on your computer. This software is available free from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/.

Recorded lectures will usually be available the day after they are held and will continue to be available throughout the session. There is a link to these recordings from WebCT.

After you click on the link, a list of lectures will appear in your web browser. You choose a lecture by making a choice from ‘select bandwidth’. If you are using a home modem, choose ‘Audio’ [or ‘Visualiser’] and a speed equal to or slower than the speed of your modem or broadband connection. For example, if you have a 28K modem, choose ‘14K’. If you are using a computer on campus, choose the highest available.

Making this choice will open the ‘Lecture Caster’ window. Read the copyright notice, click on the continue button and the lecture should begin to play. [PowerPoint slides will also be available. Slides do not automatically change as the lecture is played. You will need to click on a slide title to see a slide.]

If you have any problems, try reinstalling QuickTime. If you have a firewall on your computer you may also need to configure or disable it while you use eduStream. This is likely to be necessary if you are using Windows XP or PC-Cillin.

If you are still having problems getting eduStream to work, please refer to the online resources at http://cedir.uow.edu.au/edustream/student/
